Film Title: DEBTORS’ PRISON Film
Genre: Psychological Drama/ Thriller
LOGLINE: Four men are trapped in a debtor’s prison, but they struggle to realize they’re keeping
themselves there. With the help of financial advisors, one of them, Juuko, breaks free by gaining
control of his finances, seeking parole, and ultimately reuniting with his wife Esther, debt-free.
SYNOPSIS: Two debt collectors, menacing, threaten Esther in her apartment, demanding payment from her
husband Juuko, who arrives unexpectedly, disheveled and empty-handed, and is promptly
dragged away to the debtors’ prison by the collectors.
Juuko, a new inmate at the debtors’ prison, is welcomed by fellow prisoners Musana, Otai, and
Mugisha, who introduce him to the harsh realities of prison life, including the menial task of
“folding” paper into bags to make a living.
Days later, Juuko, Musana, Otai, and Mugisha sleep in the bunks. The Warden arrives and
wakes them up by hitting the bars. Juuko is the first one up with Mugisha and Otai following.
The Warden reminds them that they are stuck in the debtor’s prison until they can pay off their
debts and make parole. Once Musana is awakened, the warden tells them to get to work. After
some more coaxing, they start folding paper into paper bags for one hundred shillings per bag.
Sometime later, the administrator comes in and counts the bags, and hands out money. The
aging Musana gets the least while Juuko gets the most. To the four’s annoyance, the warden
lets in a group of advisers for the men to listen to. The bank adviser tries to get them to open an
account to gain interest. They show no interest. The investment adviser tries to get them to
invest some of their money. No interest. The insurance adviser tries to get them to buy a policy.
They play cards instead. Lastly, a Social Security adviser tries to lecture them on the importance
of saving for the future, but they show no interest instead.
With the advisers gone, the warden lets the salesman in. He coaxes each of them into buying
snacks and drinks with their meager earnings while the warden shakes his head in disgust.
Once the salesman gets out, the Warden questions the morality of getting men in debt to
squander the little money they have. The salesman throws it back at him, pointing out what little
morale the men would have without any luxuries.
Musana passes out during a card game. He’s taken away and the remaining three are told that
he died of a fever. Juuko is enraged at the situation, but the warden reminds him of all the help
they turned down to get them out of there. Otai’s son, William, takes Musana’s place in the cell.
Juuko’s frustration motivates him to do anything he can to seek parole.
Juuko increases his workload, to the confusion of the other prisoners. He opens a bank
account, buys an insurance policy, invests his money, and even begins paying into a social
security fund, so he’ll be eligible for social security. When others buy treats from the salesman,
Juuko buys a book on finances.
Years later, Juuko gets parole. The others are impressed. They wish him well as he leaves the
debtors’ prison. Otai begins folding paper bags with his son, William, in hopes that they’ll be
able to leave one day. Mugisha joins them.
Juuko is released from debtors’ prison and is joyfully reunited with his wife Esther, who
welcomes him home with tears of happiness, as he declares he is finally debt-free.
